Founded in 1882, the team originally only played friendly matches until they entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1885-86. Nicknamed “the Clarets” (after the dominant colour of the home shirts), they were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. The club’s emblem is based on the town’s crest. The Latin motto “Pretiumque et Causa Laboris” means “The Prize and the Cause of our Labour. Burnley has been champions of England in 1920-21 and 1959-60. They won the FA Cup in 1914 and the Community Shield in 1960 and 1973. Burnley is one of the five teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football.
