Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge is located in Fulham, adjacent to the borough of Chelsea in South West London, England. The stadium has a capacity of 40,834. Opened in 1877, the stadium was used by the London Athletic Club until 1905, when Chelsea FC was founded to occupy the ground; Chelsea have played their home games ever since. It has undergone major changes over the years, most recently in the 1990s when it was renovated into a modern, all-seater stadium. During the last renovation, a special part of “The Bridge” was left standing, namely the old wall of The Shed End, one of the stadium’s old stands. This wall is now covered with tributes to great players from the past from Peter Bonetti to Frank Lampard and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. You will find the wall behind the Shed End. The most fanatical Chelsea supporters are in the Matthew Harding Stand.

It is always pleasantly busy on Fulham Road in front of the stadium around Chelsa matches. The pubs are full and football memorabilia and program booklets are sold and people are busy buying or selling tickets. Directly opposite Stamford Bridge at number 477 is “The Butcher’s Hook” pub, a real Chelsea pub. This is the place where Chelsea FC was officially founded in 1905. A plaque in the pub reminds visitors of this special event. There are also beautiful historic photos of Stamford Bridge from long ago. The pub is only accessible to home supporters, something that is also strictly monitored. On Fulham Road you will also find the pub “The Chelsea Pensioner“. A Chelsea pensioner officially refers to the residents of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a care home for veterans of the British army, but in the last century it was often also used derisively for the Chelsea football club, which also had a “pensioner” in the club logo. There are more pubs on King’s Road such as “The Morrison” and the “Chelsea Potter“.
