Helmond Sport was founded in 1967, as a breakaway from the local professional club RKSV Helmondia’55, which had gone bankrupt. In 1982, the team were promoted to the Eredivisie. There, they would play for two seasons, before being relegated back to the Eerste Divisie, the second tier in The Netherlands. Biggest rivals of Helmond Sport are VVV-Venlo and FC Eindhoven.
