Heracles Almelo was founded in 1903 as Heracles, after the demigod son of Zeus. They changed their name in 1974 to SC Heracles’74 and in 1998 to Heracles Almelo. Heracles won the Eerste Divisie title during the 2004–05 season, gaining promotion to the Eredivisie for the first time in 28 years. The club has remained in the top division ever since. In 2012, the club reached the KNVB Cupfinal for the first time in club history, losing to PSVin the final. In 2015 Heracles introduced their new crest. The name Heracles adorns the head of the new logo in a powerful font. The striped classic black and white form the basis in the background. The club’s namesake is the Greek hero Heracles. Because of his strength, inventiveness and stamina, he was feared by his enemies. The club’s main rival is FC Twente.
