Prenton Park
Prenton Park is located in Birkenhead, England and is the home ground of Tranmere Rovers since 1887, as well as Liverpool FC’s women and reserves teams. The ground has had several rebuilds, with the most recent occurring in 1995. Today’s stadium holds 16,587. Tranmere Rover FC were formed in 1884; they played their first matches at Steeles Field in Birkenhead but, in 1887, they bought a new site from Tranmere Rugby Club. The ground was variously referred to as the “Borough Road Enclosure”, “Ravenshaw’s Field” and “South Road”. The name “Prenton Park” was adopted in 1895 as a result of a suggestion in the letters page of the Football Echo. Not strictly within Prenton, it is likely that the name was chosen as the area was regarded as more upmarket than nearby Tranmere.
